Bienvenidos a la clase de español con la Señora LeVangie
Marzo / Abril 2024
Fourth graders built their proficiency around clothing items for summer and winter weather. They had fun following along with a live Edpuzzle about Miguel and Sabo and their journey through the four seasons. Additionally students completed a presentational writing task telling me about a season they like a lot, what the weather is like in that season and what they wear during that season. After they illustrated their writing they shared their work with table groups and some wanted to present to the whole class! After vacation we'll do a brief review of colors, read La Ropa by Kimberly Deins. and play some "Adivina Quién - Guess Who". Next up is our final unit of the year: Donde Vivo Yo - Mi Casa (Where I Live - My home).
Fifth graders built their proficiency around where they like to go around town and in the city. They were also able to say where different places were located in town and in the city. We had fun with a preposition chant that featured lots of gestures and with the silly Billy la Bufanda video. And students did a fantastic job following directions in Spanish and creating maps that we will use for a fun collaborative game after vacation! Next up: writing their own book modeled on Dónde Está Spot and then we travel to the Galápagos Islands for our final unit.

Grade 4 jumped right into Unit 3 "All About My Family". We created family trees and talked about how many family members we have and who they are. Students also enjoyed looking at some famous families (from animated movies like Coco) and describing them Singing along to ¿Cómo eres tú? was a highlight of this unit. We had fun speeding it up as we got more comfortable with the lyrics. To conclude the unit students created some wonderful mini books where they described themselves and their family members.
Grade 5 moved on to the second part of Unit 3 "Likes and Dislikes - Foods and Drinks". We talked about breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We sang a few catchy tunes but the favorite was definitely singing and dancing to "Desayuno" a song about breakfast to the tune of "Despacito". Another highlight was talking about our AI images. Students wrote Spanish sentences using an animal, food and drink words, and a location which Sra. LeVangie then used to create an AI-generated image. We used the slides for discussions throughout our food and drinks unit! Students also created a menu for a restaurant and took orders from their classmates. Finally, we compared and contrasted Spanish food traditions with our own.
Noviembre - Diciembre 2023
Grade 4 students have been hard at work building their proficiency around "My School Day". Students can tell you how they feel about their school subjects, what materials they need for the subjects and what they do in their subjects! They loved our silly videos like "La Mochila' by Patti Lozano and the adventures of "Miguel y Sabo". We also read a story called "Un Día Una Señora Se Tragó Unos Libros" which involved audience participation! We finished up this unit with students doing some presentational writing about a subject that they like a lot.
Grade 5 has been hard at work building their proficiency around “Likes and Dislikes: Pastimes and Sports”. Students have loved sharing what they like to do! They shared the favorite pastimes of family members as well. Finally, students were able to learn about the preferences of their Dale Street teachers! Next up is the second part of our “Likes and Dislikes Unit: Foods and Drinks”. We will talk about breakfast and lunch and we’ll introduce dinner right after vacation.

We've had a wonderful start to the school year! I've really enjoyed getting to know my wonderful students.
Grade 4 students completed our "Getting to Know You" unit. We finished the unit with a lesson on Hispanic Heritage Month. We read a story called Pepe and the Parade. Students learned when, where, why and how Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated. We've just started our next unit, "My School Day".
After our back-to-school intros and review of essential classroom vocabulary, Grade 5 students jumped right into our Hispanic Heritage Month unit. Students are working on a Book Creator project where they are researching a country celebrating its independence during Hispanic Heritage Month. Soon they will be sharing the books with classmates. Next up is our "My Likes and Dislikes - Pastimes and Sports" unit.
